Narayanpur (Bhagalpur), News Correspondent: The Ganga Diyara region under the Narayanpur block of Bhagalpur district is currently grappling with a severe natural and geographical crisis. Due to the accumulation of river water at the vital Madhurapur Jahaj Ghat, which falls under the Bhawanipur police station jurisdiction, the connectivity route linking the Diyara region to the mainland has been completely severed. With the existence of the pathway wiped out, the daily lives of local farmers, cattle rearers, and ordinary villagers have been severely disrupted. In such grim circumstances, with road communication completely paralyzed, boats have become the sole and final lifeline for the transit of these hardworking people.
Waterlogging for Nearly 15 Days, Daily Routine Paralyzed
Describing the gravity of the situation, local diver and boatman Vijay Mandal stated that water has been continuously stagnating at the Madhurapur Jahaj Ghat for the past 15 days. With the rising water level of the Ganga river and the connecting route getting submerged and broken, internal connectivity within the Diyara region has been cut off. All traditional means of transport have halted, forcing farmers and cattle rearers to face immense hardships for routine tasks. During situations like children's schooling, market needs, and medical emergencies, this distance becomes even more agonizing.
Mounting Woes for Cattle Rearers and Farmers
The Diyara region of Narayanpur is renowned far and wide for its fertile soil and animal husbandry. The livelihood of a majority of people here depends solely on agriculture and livestock, but with the snapping of the connectivity route, their challenges have multiplied manifold:
Fodder Crisis: Arranging fodder for their cattle has become the biggest challenge for cattle rearers. Transporting fodder from Diyara's fields and bringing it to the main market has become impossible without boats.
Disrupted Crop Transport: Selling agricultural produce grown by farmers in the market on time has become difficult, adversely affecting their financial stability.
Villagers Forced to Travel at Risk to Their Lives
In the absence of any administrative alternative arrangements or a sturdy bridge, villagers are compelled to cross the ghat under hazardous conditions without any safety gear or supervision. Loading goods and cattle beyond capacity on boats while crossing the river constantly carries a massive risk to life and property. Locals state that even a slight carelessness could trigger a major accident, yet out of compulsion, they are forced to choose this perilous journey.
Boatmen Serving for 40-45 Years, But Government Assistance is Zero
Amidst this hour of crisis, local divers and boatmen who have been providing their services for over four decades have stood like guardian angels for the region. Sharing his pain, diver Vijay Mandal stated that he has been continuously rendering his services at this ghat for nearly 40 to 45 years. He has to perform his duties from morning until 11:00 PM so that no villager is left helpless during an emergency. Despite remaining alert day and night, they do not receive any form of government encouragement, salary, or assistance, laying bare the apathy of the system.

Every year during floods and rising water levels, Diyara residents are forced to endure such hellish agony. Local farmers, cattle rearers, and panchayat members have urged the district administration to immediately arrange large government boats on a permanent basis to facilitate smooth transit along this sensitive route, and to find a lasting solution for the future so that these providers of food do not have to face such life-threatening hardships.
