Urban River Management Master Plan to Be Ready in Eight Months, Silk Haat Proposed in Nathnagar Plans Include Revival of Rivers, Environmental Development, Sewage Management and Tourism Promotion
Bhagalpur : Work has gained momentum on the Urban River Management Plan (URMP) aimed at protecting rivers, water bodies and the urban environment of Bhagalpur. Under the project, a comprehensive master plan will be prepared within eight months following detailed surveys and studies. The plan is expected to focus on reviving the old course of the Ganga that has moved away from parts of the city, restoring and protecting the historic Champa River, and developing riverbank areas in an environmentally sustainable manner.
A second review meeting on the Urban River Management Plan was held at the Integrated Command and Control Centre in the Bhagalpur Smart City building. Officials from various departments and technical experts discussed issues related to river management, water conservation, flood control and environmental balance. The technical team has been directed to complete the required surveys and studies and prepare the detailed master plan within eight months.
Silk Haat Proposed in Nathnagar
One of the major proposals under the plan is the development of a Silk Haat in Nathnagar. Bhagalpur is widely known for its silk and traditional weaving industry. The proposed Silk Haat is expected to provide an organised platform for local silk products, weavers and traders.
The centre could help showcase and sell locally produced silk goods while providing a new identity and greater visibility to the region’s silk industry. It is also expected to support traditional artisans and promote the local economy.
Focus on Restoration of the Champa River
The Urban River Management Plan places special emphasis on the cleaning and restoration of the historic Champa River. A proposal has been made to develop eco-parks along the riverbanks. Long-term strategies are also being prepared for the protection of the Ganga and other water bodies.
The objective is not limited to cleaning the rivers. The plan seeks to integrate water flow management, pollution control, flood management and environmental conservation into the city’s overall development strategy. Water quality is also expected to be monitored at the Ganga’s entry and exit points.
Efforts to Stop Polluted Water from Entering the Ganga
The issue of polluted water entering the Ganga from city drains and industrial units was also discussed during the review meeting. According to reports, wastewater from 43 drains and 12 industries is currently reaching the Ganga. To address this problem, the need for additional sewage treatment infrastructure, considering requirements up to the year 2041, has been discussed.
A separate treatment plant for the Barari BIADA area and stronger septage management arrangements have also been proposed. These measures are expected to reduce pollution and improve the management of wastewater generated in the city.
Eco-Tourism and Marine Drive Also Proposed
The Urban River Management Plan also includes proposals to develop Bhagalpur as a tourism destination. Plans are being considered to develop the Vikramshila area according to its historical and cultural significance, promote Gangetic dolphin conservation and encourage eco-tourism along the river.
The proposed development also includes a plan to connect the Marine Drive with Barari, Babupur, Musahari Ghat and Bhootnath Temple Road. Natural barriers and green infrastructure may also be developed to provide protection against flooding.
Focus on Long-Term Development
According to officials, the plan is being designed by keeping the region’s requirements for the next 50 to 100 years in mind. Once the master plan is completed, it is expected to provide an integrated roadmap for river and water-body conservation, urban development, pollution control, tourism promotion and flood management.
