Shahkund (Bhagalpur): A severe drinking water crisis has emerged in Rampurdih village, located in the Shahkund block of Bhagalpur district. For the past 15 days, the water supply from the Rampurdih water tower has been completely suspended, forcing local villagers to struggle for every drop of water amidst the intense heat and humidity. The villagers allege that this situation has arisen due to the negligence of the administration and the concerned department.
Water Crisis Since June 29
According to the information received, the water supply from the tower was cut off on June 29. Initially, the villagers assumed it was a minor technical glitch that would be resolved within a day or two. However, even after 15 days, the situation remains unchanged. With the water tower non-functional, taps in hundreds of households across the village have run dry, causing immense difficulty for people in performing even their most basic daily chores.
The Villagers' Struggle: 'No Arrangements for Drinking Water'
Villagers state that the water tower was their only primary source of clean drinking water. With it shut down, they are now forced to rely on contaminated water or private handpumps located far from their homes.
Hardships for Women: Women and children are being forced to travel long distances just to fetch water. Since it is the summer season, the demand for water is much higher, which has further compounded their misery.
Crisis for Cattle Owners: There are many cattle owners in the village who are unable to find enough water to provide for their livestock.
Administrative Apathy and the Issue Raised in Meetings
There is massive public outrage regarding this matter. The issue of the water supply problem was recently discussed during a 20-point program (Bees Sutri) meeting held at the block headquarters' representative building. The meeting was chaired by 20-point program president Vinay Kumar. However, despite being discussed in the meeting, no ground-level improvements have been observed yet.
The villagers are questioning why it is taking 15 long days to fix the issue if the administration is already aware of it. They have also alleged that despite lodging multiple complaints, the concerned officials are not taking the matter seriously.

The 'Har Ghar Nal Ka Jal' (Tap water in every home) scheme is an ambitious government project aimed at providing clean drinking water to every rural citizen. The fact that the water tower in Rampurdih has remained closed for 15 days highlights a failure in this scheme. The department has yet to clarify the specific technical reason for the failure or provide a timeline for when it will be resolved.
Villagers’ Warning: Protests If Situation Does Not Improve
The villagers have warned that if the water tower is not repaired and the water supply is not restored immediately, they will be forced to gherao (surround) the block office. Local residents declared that they can no longer tolerate this water shortage during the summer season.
