Area Shaken by Three Separate Road Accidents; Half a Dozen Injured, Critical Patients Referred to Mayaganj
NAUGACHIA (Bhagalpur): Saturday turned out to be a tragic day for the Naugachia subdivision of Bhagalpur district as three severe road accidents in different parts of the region severely disrupted normal life. A total of six people have been seriously injured in these mishaps. The condition of some of the victims remains critical, leading to their transfer to the Jawaharlal Nehru Medical College and Hospital (Mayaganj Hospital) in Bhagalpur for advanced medical care, while others are undergoing treatment at the Naugachia Subdivisional Hospital.
Sequence of Events: A Series of Mishaps
These incidents did not occur in one location, but at different times and places, leaving local police and the administration in a state of shock.
First Accident: On NH-31, a speeding and out-of-control vehicle hit two youths on a bike with such force that both were thrown a significant distance.
Second Accident: Near the local market, an auto-rickshaw and a bicycle collided head-on, leaving the cyclist critically injured and causing injuries to other passengers inside the auto-rickshaw.
Third Accident: In another area, an elderly person crossing the road was hit by an unidentified vehicle. The driver managed to flee the spot with the vehicle immediately after the accident.
Chaos at the Hospital
Upon receiving information about the accidents, local residents immediately alerted the '108' ambulance service and the police. The injured were rushed to the Naugachia Subdivisional Hospital in a state of panic. The sudden influx of multiple patients left the team of doctors on duty struggling to manage the situation.
The duty doctor stated, "Some of the injured have sustained severe head and leg injuries. After providing first aid, patients who were in more critical condition were immediately referred to Bhagalpur to ensure they receive advanced neurological and surgical care."
Police Action and Sensitivity
Upon receiving the reports, a team from the Naugachia police arrived at the accident sites. The police have seized the damaged vehicles and initiated a search for the absconding drivers. The Station House Officer (SHO) mentioned that the administration is continuously raising public awareness to reduce accidents on NH-31, but the menace of speeding shows no sign of stopping. He added that CCTV footage is being reviewed to identify the guilty drivers so that strict legal action can be taken against them.
Reasons Behind the Rising Accidents
Local intellectuals and social workers believe there are three main reasons for the rising number of road accidents in Naugachia:
Speeding and Negligence: Most youth ride at high speeds without helmets, which often proves fatal.
Encroachment on Roadsides: Due to heavy encroachment on the roadsides in market areas, vehicles have very little space to navigate, resulting in frequent traffic jams and accidents.
Poor Road Design: Certain turns on NH-31 are extremely dangerous and lack proper warning signage.
Need for Seriousness Regarding Safety
These incidents have once again raised questions about the adherence to traffic safety rules. The administration has appealed to citizens to mandatory use helmets or seat belts and follow traffic regulations. The district administration now needs to identify these 'Black Spots' and install speed breakers and increase police patrolling in those areas. Currently, the families of those admitted to Mayaganj Hospital are praying for their recovery. The Naugachia police have stated that strict action will be taken against the culprits as soon as the investigation is completed.
