Astronomy Lab Built at a Cost of Crores at Government Girls' Inter School Proves to be a 'White Elephant'; Modern Equipment Gathering Dust Due to Lack of Operation
BHAGALPUR: The 'Astronomy Lab,' constructed by the Smart City Company at the Government Girls' Inter School in Bhagalpur with the aim of taking science education to new heights and sparking an interest in space science among students, is currently languishing in a state of neglect. This modern laboratory, prepared at a cost of millions, which was once meant to open new doors of knowledge for students, has now been reduced to a locked room due to the absence of a proper operating system.
A Wide Gap Between Intent and Reality
The lab was built under an extremely ambitious plan. Its objective was to provide students with a practical understanding of the solar system, celestial bodies, and the complexities of space science. The plan was not limited to the school's own students; it intended to invite students from other schools in the city to gain knowledge of astronomy here as well.
However, the negligence shown toward its operation since its construction has resulted in the laboratory remaining closed most of the time. The excitement seen among students at the time of the lab’s inauguration has now completely faded, as they are unable to reap its benefits.
The Lack of a Lab Demonstrator is the Root Cause
The core of this entire problem is the failure to appoint a trained 'Demonstrator' to operate the lab. Experts believe that if a laboratory lacks a technical expert to run it, the expensive and sensitive equipment housed within gradually becomes defunct.
Regarding this, the school principal, Amarnath, stated that the department was informed about the need for trained personnel at the time of the lab's construction, but no concrete decision was taken in this direction. The current situation is that there is no specialized teacher appointed for the lab. During the lab's construction, about seven teachers from the school were trained, but many of them have since been transferred. Now, only two or three trained teachers remain, who attempt to provide lab-related information to students in their limited time, but this is insufficient for regular activities.
Construction Work and Disorganization
It is not just the lack of a demonstrator that keeps the lab closed, but other administrative flaws as well. According to the principal, certain other works have been ongoing in the lab building for the past few days, which has also necessitated keeping it shut. Despite being a model school where regular experiments and maximum utilization of laboratory facilities are expected, such mismanagement raises questions about the quality of education.
What Do Experts and the Administration Say?
Educationists believe that simply creating infrastructure does not improve education. As long as the responsibility for operations is not handed over to a specific technical expert, such wastage of government assets will continue. While the Smart City Company built the lab, failing to establish an 'exit policy' or 'operational responsibility' for its maintenance and continuous running is the biggest failure of this project.
Hopes for the Future
This case of the Astronomy Lab serves as a lesson for the Bhagalpur Education Department. If a demonstrator is not appointed in time and a robust system for operations is not established, this equipment, worth crores, will turn into complete scrap. The dream of developing scientific thinking among students will remain unfulfilled as long as the doors of this lab do not open for them regularly.
It remains to be seen whether the district administration and the education department will take concrete steps to revive this 'Astronomy Lab,' or if it will remain confined only to files and news reports.
