Severe questions regarding health infrastructure and security have once again been raised at Sri Krishna Medical College and Hospital (SKMCH), the largest government hospital in Bihar's Muzaffarpur district. Following the death of a female patient during treatment inside the hospital's emergency ward, the situation turned completely violent. The deceased was identified as Shabnam Khatoon, who had been admitted to the hospital in a critical condition. Upon receiving the news of her death, a violent clash broke out between agitated relatives and the hospital's doctors and medical staff, turning the SKMCH premises into a battlefield.
Background of the Incident and How the Situation Escalated
According to reports, Shabnam Khatoon was brought to the SKMCH emergency ward by her family members for treatment after falling seriously ill. Doctors and medical staff immediately shifted her to the life-support ward and commenced treatment. The relatives alleged that despite the patient's deteriorating condition, doctors failed to pay timely attention, causing her health to continuously worsen.
Within a few hours, Shabnam Khatoon passed away during treatment. As soon as the news of her death reached the family members waiting inside and outside the hospital, chaos erupted. Overcome by grief and anger, the relatives accused doctors and healthcare personnel of severe negligence and started creating an uproar. Within moments, this verbal dispute escalated into a violent clash.
Vandalism in the Emergency Ward and Bloody Conflict
Blinded by rage, relatives and local individuals launched extensive vandalism inside the SKMCH emergency ward. Medical equipment, chairs, window panes, and the computer counter inside the ward were severely damaged.
Seeing the situation spiral out of control, when resident doctors and medical staff present on the scene attempted to intervene, a fierce bloody conflict broke out between the two sides. Relatives and doctors exchanged blows, kicks, and sticks. This violent clash left several doctors, medical workers, and patient attendants seriously injured. The sudden attack triggered panic in the emergency ward, causing other critical patients and their attendants under treatment to run helter-skelter to save their lives.
Prompt Police Action and Control Over the Situation
Upon receiving information about the violence and tension on the SKMCH premises, police forces from the Mithanpura and Ahiyapur police stations rushed to the spot with heavy reinforcement. Additionally, senior district administration officials were deployed on the hospital premises with extra police force.
The police struggled hard to control the situation. Mild force had to be used by the police to disperse the rioters and protesting crowd. Order was somehow restored on the hospital premises following the deployment of police forces. The administration issued a strict warning that anyone taking the law into their own hands and vandalizing the hospital will not be spared under any circumstances.
Doctors' Boycott of Work and Demand for Security
Following this violent incident, immense anger has gripped the doctors and junior residents of SKMCH. Citing security concerns, doctors issued an immediate warning of a work boycott (strike). Doctors stated that patient attendants frequently assault them and engage in vandalism at government hospitals, leaving their lives constantly under threat.
Anticipating a total shutdown of emergency services, the hospital administration and senior officials initiated a high-level meeting with the aggrieved doctors. The administration assured the doctors that robust security arrangements will be established on the hospital premises and strict legal action will be taken against the culprits.

The hospital management and police have initiated the process of filing a First Information Report (FIR) regarding the entire matter. Footage from CCTV cameras installed in the emergency ward and surrounding areas is being scanned to identify the main rioters responsible for the vandalism and instigating violence. Police stated that based on video footage, culprits will be identified and their arrests will be ensured.
