Sanitation Workers Take to the Streets Demanding Pending Wages and Pay Hikes, Seek Help at BJP Office
PIRPAINTI (Bhagalpur): The sanitation workers, who keep the Nagar Panchayat of Pirpainti clean, are currently facing a dire crisis. Carrying their grievances regarding long-pending salary payments, dozens of sanitation workers arrived at the local BJP office today to meet MLA Murari Mohan Mandal (Murari Paswan). During the meeting, the workers not only raised concerns about their unpaid salaries but also strongly demanded an increase in their honorarium commensurate with their workload.
The Plight of the Sanitation Workers
The sanitation workers employed by the Nagar Panchayat state that they work day and night to maintain the city's cleanliness, but they do not receive their hard-earned wages on time. The workers revealed that they have not been paid for the last month, which has left them struggling to run their households. They are being forced to borrow money or rely on others to cover basic necessities like children's education, food, and other essential expenses.
A representative of the sanitation workers said, "We keep the city clean to prevent epidemics and ensure public health. But how can our families survive if we stay hungry while doing this work? With no salary for the past month, it has become difficult for us to even light the stoves in our homes."
Demands for a Salary Hike
Beyond the issue of pending wages, the sanitation workers have also demanded an increase in their current monthly honorarium. They argue that in these times of rising inflation, it is impossible to support a family on their current pay. They urged the MLA to recognize their hard work and increase their remuneration so they can lead a life of dignity.
The workers submitted a memorandum of their demands at the MLA’s office. They clearly stated that if their issues are not resolved soon, they will be forced to stop the sanitation work.
MLA Murari Paswan’s Assurance
After listening to the grievances of the sanitation workers, local MLA Murari Mohan Mandal addressed their concerns with seriousness. He immediately contacted the relevant officials of the Nagar Panchayat over the phone and demanded to know the reason for the delay in salary disbursement.
Assuring the workers, the MLA said, "Sanitation workers are the backbone of our city. It is unfortunate that they are not receiving their wages on time. I have spoken to the Executive Officer of the Nagar Panchayat and instructed them to release the pending salary for the last month as soon as possible. Regarding the demand for a pay hike, we will take this up with higher authorities and strive to find an appropriate solution."
He further promised that no sanitation worker would be exploited and that their demands would be communicated to the concerned department.
Political and Administrative Hurdles
In the Nagar Panchayat area, delays in payments are often blamed on financial irregularities or a lack of funds. This protest by the sanitation workers also raises questions about the working style of the Nagar Panchayat administration. Locals note that it is an administrative failure when those responsible for the city’s hygiene are forced to run from pillar to post just to receive their basic wages.
This incident has once again put the management of the Pirpainti Nagar Panchayat in the dock. The sanitation workers have warned that if their pending salaries are not credited to their accounts within the next few days, they will be forced to go on an indefinite strike, the consequences of which the entire Nagar Panchayat area might have to bear.
The sanitation workers, who clean the city's filth, are currently filled with despair regarding their own future. Their plea at the MLA's office indicates a deep-seated flaw in the system. For now, the workers are placing their trust in the MLA’s assurance, but they are looking for concrete results.
