Sultanganj Administration Tightens Grip Ahead of Shravani Mela; Encroachments Cleared Along Abjuganj-Shahabad Road
SULTANGANJ (Bhagalpur): In preparation for the world-famous Shravani Mela 2026, the Sultanganj administration is leaving no stone unturned to ensure a seamless experience for pilgrims. Taking a significant step toward this goal, the administration conducted an anti-encroachment drive on Thursday, clearing illegal occupations along the Abjuganj-Shahabad road. This action is part of a broader effort to streamline traffic flow and prevent congestion-related issues for the thousands of Kanwariyas expected to arrive.
Details of the Administrative Action
With the Shravani Mela only days away, the local administration identified several spots along the Abjuganj-Shahabad route where individuals had encroached upon public land with temporary structures, stalls, and various goods.
On Thursday, under the supervision of administrative officials and supported by a heavy police presence, a targeted drive was carried out. Bulldozers and other equipment were used to dismantle the illegal structures. The administration has issued a stern warning that any future attempts to encroach upon public thoroughfares will face strict legal consequences.
Preparations for the Fair in Full Swing
Preparations for the Shravani Mela 2026 in Sultanganj are being conducted on a war footing. The district administration and the City Council are working together to make the fairgrounds both safe and accessible for pilgrims:
Ghat Cleaning and Safety: Renovation, painting, and the installation of safety barricades at Namami Gange Ghat, Sidhi Ghat, and the Ajgaibinath Temple Ghat are proceeding at a rapid pace.
Kanwariya Facilities: Sand is being spread along the Kanwariya Path, and Swiss cottages and German hangars are being set up to ensure adequate accommodation for the millions of pilgrims.
Modern Technology: This year, the fair will feature attractions such as drone shows and modern Argha systems (for water offering), alongside 24-hour monitoring via CCTV and drone surveillance.
Robust Security Arrangements
To maintain law and order throughout the month-long event, over 3,000 police personnel are being deployed. This includes bike-patrolling units, specialized teams in civilian clothing, and additional reinforcements at sensitive locations. Officials have been instructed to ensure that all security deployments and logistical arrangements are fully operational by July 27.
Appeal to the Public
The administration has appealed to shopkeepers and local residents to refrain from encroaching on roadsides, emphasizing that keeping paths clear is vital for the smooth movement of the long queues of Kanwariyas. The local community has largely welcomed the anti-encroachment drive, noting that the resulting widening of the roads will also help mitigate traffic congestion in the long run.
The world-famous Shravani Mela is set to commence on July 30. The administration has expressed confidence that this year’s arrangements will be safer and more efficient than in any previous year.
