Violent Protests in Bhagalpur: Several Policemen Injured in Stone-Pelting by Troublemakers; Lathi-Charge Triggers Stampede and Vehicle Collisions, Leaving Many Injured
The tension that sparked during the student protest in Bhagalpur has now escalated into a severe and violent confrontation. The situation went completely out of hand when the protest turned aggressive at Tilka Manjhi Chowk, and troublemakers hidden within the crowd threw law and order to the wind, targeting the police force itself. Amidst the ensuing chaos, several police personnel, common citizens, and students were badly injured.
Rampage by Troublemakers and Stone-Pelting on Police
According to details, when the police administration attempted to regulate traffic and pacify the crowd, certain anti-social elements concealed among the protesters resorted to violence. They suddenly launched an attack on the police personnel using bricks, stones, and glass bottles. This sudden stone-pelting caused a massive stampede at the spot.
Several police officers and jawans on duty sustained serious injuries in this violent assault. Despite the sudden attack, the police force exercised restraint initially to control the situation; however, when the aggression of the troublemakers did not subside, the police were compelled to take strict action.
Police Retaliation and Lathi-Charge
To stop the continuous stone-pelting on their personnel and prevent damage to public property, the police took charge and retaliated. A mild lathi-charge was executed to scatter and chase away the aggressive mob.
As the lathi-charge began, cries and panic echoed across Tilka Manjhi Chowk and its surrounding routes. A state of stampede unfolded on the streets, deepening the chaos.
Injuries Caused by Stampede and Vehicle Collisions
During the police lathi-charge and the sudden stampede, people sustained injuries not only from batons but also due to several other factors:
Injuries from Falling in the Stampede: In the rush and frantic effort to escape, many people fell to the ground and were trampled by the surging crowd behind them, leaving them seriously injured.
Vehicle Collisions: Amidst the panic, several individuals were injured after colliding with moving vehicles on the road. Drivers did not get a chance to react properly, resulting in some people coming into the path of vehicles during the stampede.
Police Action: During the lathi-charge, along with troublemakers, some individuals who were merely bystanders or trying to assess the situation also got caught in the crossfire.
Many of the injured were promptly rushed to local hospitals and district medical facilities, where they are currently receiving treatment.
Administration's Strict Stance and Security Measures
Following this incident, the Bhagalpur administration has been put on high alert. Senior police officials inspected the site and issued clear directives that no one taking the law into their own hands will be spared. Video footage and CCTV cameras are being utilized to identify the troublemakers involved in the stone-pelting.
Currently, a heavy police force is deployed throughout the area, and patrolling has been stepped up to prevent any rumors or a resurgence of violence. The administration has strongly appealed to the general citizens to maintain peace and abide by the law.
