A Surge of Devotion; Group of Kanwariyas Arrives from Kalighat for a Holy Dip in the Ganga
SULTANGANJ (Bhagalpur): Even before the official commencement of the Shravani Mela 2026 (July 30), the atmosphere in the holy city of Sultanganj is already saturated with devotion. The ambiance turned spiritually electric on Saturday when a group of two dozen Kanwariyas, who arrived after an arduous journey on foot from Kalighat, West Bengal, took a holy dip in the Uttarvahini Ganga. The entire ghat premises echoed with chants of "Har Har Mahadev" and "Bol Bam."
The Long Path of Faith: From Bengal to Ajgaivinath Dham
The group of Kanwariyas from Kalighat shared that they are traveling with a special Kanwar weighing one quintal. Undertaking such a long journey on foot carrying such a heavy load reflects their unwavering faith and dedication toward Lord Shiva. The members of the group stated that they set out with a firm resolve to complete the challenging pilgrimage to Baba Baidyanath Dham. After taking a dip in the sacred Ganga at Sultanganj, these pilgrims will collect holy water as per rituals and depart for Deoghar.
The Arrival of the Mela and Growing Crowds
Although the Shravani Mela is officially scheduled to begin on July 30, the number of pilgrims in Sultanganj is increasing daily. Kanwariyas from distant states like Assam, Odisha, Nepal, and West Bengal have already begun to arrive. The queues of devotees waiting to offer water at the Ajgaivinath Dham are growing longer, signaling that this year's Kanwar Yatra is set to be even grander than in previous years.
Administrative Preparations and Final-Phase Work
Seeing this surge in crowds, the Bhagalpur district administration has geared up. The District Magistrate recently visited Sultanganj to inspect all arrangements, including the drone shows, German hangars, Tent Cities, and the Ganga Maha-Aarti. Officials have been given strict instructions to ensure all construction work and necessary facilities are completed by July 24.
Traffic and Connectivity: In view of the crowds, the Railways have announced the operation of Shravani Mela Special trains between Ranchi and Bhagalpur, which will halt at Sultanganj.
Security and Technical Support: For the first time, AI-based CCTV surveillance and drones are being used for security. Additionally, a "modern Argha system" has been provisioned at the Ajgaivinath temple to facilitate smoother water offerings.
Facilities: Construction of Tent Cities for the Kanwariyas is in full swing. Furthermore, there is a plan to operate 24-hour health camps at 14 locations to ensure immediate assistance for any emergency cases.
A Union of Devotion and Resolve
This group of Kanwariyas from Kalighat is not only showcasing their faith but also representing the sentiments of millions of Shiva devotees who are eager for a glimpse of Baba, setting aside all their hardships. Today, the ghats of Sultanganj are imbued with the same spiritual energy. The administration’s goal is to make this difficult 'Bol Bam' pilgrimage smoother and safer for the Kanwariyas.
