Rising Water Levels of Ganga and Kosi Trigger Alarm; Floodwaters Spread to Low-Lying Areas
BHAGALPUR: In the Bhagalpur district, the rising water levels of the Ganga and Kosi rivers have become a major cause for concern. Following an active monsoon season and persistent torrential rainfall, the rivers are swelling rapidly, leaving residents along the banks in a state of anxiety. In sensitive areas such as Naugachia and Gopalpur, floodwaters have begun to infiltrate low-lying residential regions and agricultural fields.
Rapid Surge in Water Levels
According to data from the Meteorological Centre, Patna, and the Central Water Commission, a continuous upward trend in the water levels of both the Ganga and Kosi rivers is being recorded. Recent reports indicate that the water level of the Ganga has risen by 24 centimeters in the last 24 hours alone. The situation has reached a critical stage, with river water now reaching dangerously close to the embankments in several locations, raising serious concerns regarding their structural integrity and safety.
The Kosi river is similarly experiencing a fierce surge. Continuous monitoring at key gauge sites, such as Madrauni, has shown a steady rise in water levels. This rapid flow has spelled disaster for farmers in the 'diara' (riverine) areas, where vast swathes of standing crops have been submerged, causing deep distress among the farming community.
Administration on High Alert
In view of the potential threat of floods and severe soil erosion, the district administration has stepped into high-alert mode. The Flood Control Division in Naugachia has identified 27 highly sensitive locations across the district that are currently under special surveillance. Executive Engineer E. Gautam Kumar stated that departmental teams are working in 24x7 shifts, keeping a close watch on the condition of the embankments to prevent any untoward incidents.
While the administration asserts that adequate resources are stockpiled to handle any emergency, local villagers remain apprehensive. Many have expressed deep concerns regarding the overall stability of the protective embankments during this high-pressure period.
Warnings for Low-Lying Areas
Along with the rising water levels, the administration has issued prior warnings for residents in low-lying areas. People in regions where water encroachment has already begun are being advised to remain vigilant and prepare to relocate to safer grounds if necessary. This fluctuation in water levels has increased not only the flood risk but also the threat of riverbank erosion, spreading fear among the villages situated along the riverbanks.
Outlook for the Coming Days
The Meteorological Department has issued a warning for heavy rainfall across several districts in Bihar for the next few days, which is likely to cause a further rise in the river water levels. If the current trend of heavy precipitation persists, the situation could deteriorate significantly.
At present, both the Bhagalpur administration and the general public are bracing themselves to face this natural challenge. All eyes are currently fixed on the turbulent waves of the Ganga and Kosi, as authorities have appealed to the public to ignore rumors and rely solely on official information and updates.
