18 Districts Under Yellow Alert, Rain and Thunderstorms Likely; Lightning Risk Remains

Patna: Bihar is likely to witness another spell of unsettled weather on Wednesday, August 12. Several districts may receive rain accompanied by thunderstorms and lightning, while strong winds are also expected in some areas. A yellow alert has been issued for 18 districts, particularly parts of north-western, north-central and north-eastern Bihar. Light to moderate rainfall is likely in the affected areas, with winds reaching around 30–40 kmph.

According to the latest weather information, the districts likely to experience adverse weather conditions include West Champaran, East Champaran, Gopalganj, Siwan, Saran, Bhojpur, Buxar, Kaimur, Rohtas, Aurangabad, Saharsa, Madhepura, Supaul, Araria, Kishanganj, Purnia and Katihar. The available forecast source lists 17 district names despite describing the warning as covering 18 districts, so the exact district count should be cross-checked against the latest district-wise bulletin before publication.

Rain Likely in Several Parts of Bihar

The weather pattern across Bihar remains changeable. While widespread heavy rain is not expected across the state during the next 24 hours, scattered showers and thunderstorms may occur in several areas.

The India Meteorological Department's August 11 bulletin indicated isolated to scattered rainfall over Bihar during August 11–13, followed by fairly widespread to widespread rainfall during August 14–17. The IMD also forecast isolated heavy rainfall over Bihar from August 14 to 17.

This suggests that the weather could become more active again later in the week, even though Wednesday's immediate concern is mainly thunderstorms, lightning and localised rainfall.

Siwan, Saran and Gopalganj May Receive Rain

The western and north-western parts of Bihar are among the areas under the current weather alert. Siwan, Saran and Gopalganj may experience cloudy conditions, rain and thunderstorms.

For residents, the changing weather could provide relief from humidity and daytime heat. However, thunderstorms and lightning can create serious risks, particularly for people working outdoors.

Farmers in these districts may also need to monitor the weather before carrying out agricultural activities. During lightning and thunderstorms, working in open fields can be dangerous.

Buxar and Bhojpur Also on Alert

Buxar and Bhojpur are among the districts included in the warning. Both districts may experience thunderstorms, gusty winds and rain.

Localised rainfall can be beneficial for agricultural activity, particularly during the monsoon season. However, excessive rainfall within a short period can also create waterlogging in low-lying areas.

People travelling on roads should therefore remain cautious during periods of heavy showers or poor visibility. Two-wheelers are particularly vulnerable during strong winds and thunderstorms.

Eastern and North-Eastern Bihar to Remain Watchful

The alert also covers several districts in eastern and north-eastern Bihar, including Saharsa, Madhepura, Supaul, Araria, Kishanganj, Purnia and Katihar.

These areas may experience thunderstorms and lightning along with rain. Weather conditions can change rapidly during monsoon thunderstorms, with clouds building up within a short period and strong winds developing suddenly.

Residents are advised to avoid unnecessary exposure outdoors when thunderstorm activity begins.

No Heavy-Rain Alert for Any District Today

One important point in the current forecast is that no district has been placed under a heavy-rain alert for the immediate 24-hour period. The expected rainfall is mainly light to moderate, although isolated heavy rainfall cannot be completely ruled out, particularly in areas closer to the Nepal border.

Therefore, the yellow alert should not be interpreted as a warning of widespread torrential rain across Bihar. The major concern is the combination of thunderstorms, lightning and strong winds.

Lightning Remains a Major Concern

The latest warning comes after several lightning-related deaths were reported in Bihar on Tuesday. According to the available report, multiple people were killed by lightning in different parts of the state, including Banka, Lakhisarai, Nawada and Jamui.

The incidents underline the importance of taking lightning warnings seriously.

Lightning can strike even when rainfall at a particular location is limited. People who remain in open fields, under isolated trees or near exposed structures during thunderstorms can face significant danger.

For this reason, residents should move indoors as soon as thunderstorm activity begins.

Farmers Need to Take Extra Precautions

Monsoon rainfall is important for Bihar's agricultural economy, and farmers depend heavily on timely showers for crops. However, thunderstorms and lightning create additional risks for people working in agricultural fields.

Farmers should avoid remaining in open fields during lightning activity. If a storm develops suddenly, they should move to a safe enclosed building rather than taking shelter under a tree.

Farm equipment and other metal objects should also be kept away from people during thunderstorms.

Patna May Receive Light Rain

The capital Patna is not under the same district-level warning described for the 18 districts, but partly cloudy conditions and the possibility of thunderstorms and light rain have been forecast.

The maximum temperature in Patna is expected to remain around 35°C, according to the latest available forecast. Heavy rainfall is not expected in the capital during the immediate period.

The combination of cloud cover and occasional showers could provide temporary relief from humid conditions, although temperatures may continue to feel uncomfortable when the sun returns.

Temperature Had Increased With Weakening Monsoon Activity

The recent weather pattern indicates that monsoon activity has been relatively subdued in parts of Bihar. The weakening rainfall activity contributed to a rise in daytime temperatures in several districts.

Supaul recorded the state's highest maximum temperature on August 11 at 37.4°C, according to the available weather report.

The arrival of thunderstorms and showers can temporarily lower temperatures, but humidity may remain high after rainfall.

This combination of heat and humidity can make the weather uncomfortable, especially during the afternoon.

Weather Could Become More Active From August 14

While the immediate forecast suggests scattered rainfall and thunderstorms, the broader IMD outlook indicates that Bihar could experience more widespread rainfall later in the week.

The IMD forecast fairly widespread to widespread rainfall over Bihar from August 14 to August 17, with isolated heavy rainfall also likely during this period.

This means people should continue monitoring weather updates rather than considering Wednesday's weather activity an isolated event.

The monsoon system can shift quickly, and district-level conditions may change within a few hours.

Impact on Roads and Daily Life

Rainfall accompanied by thunderstorms can affect normal life in urban as well as rural areas.

In cities, sudden showers can lead to water accumulation on roads, traffic slowdowns and reduced visibility. Strong winds may also affect trees, temporary structures, banners and other objects.

In rural areas, thunderstorms can interrupt agricultural work and outdoor activities.

People commuting to work, schools or markets should check local weather conditions before starting their journey, particularly if dark clouds and thunderstorm activity are already visible.

Electricity Supply May Also Be Affected

Strong winds and lightning can sometimes cause local disruptions to electricity infrastructure. Power lines, transformers and other equipment may be affected during severe thunderstorms.

Residents should avoid touching fallen electrical wires or approaching damaged electrical equipment. Any such incident should be reported to the electricity department rather than being handled personally.

People should also remain cautious around waterlogged areas where electrical equipment may be nearby.

What Should People Do During Lightning?

The most important precaution during a thunderstorm is to move indoors. People should avoid open fields, rooftops, isolated trees, ponds and other exposed locations.

If someone is already outdoors when lightning begins, they should seek a proper enclosed shelter as quickly as possible.

It is also advisable to avoid standing near tall isolated structures or metal objects during severe lightning activity.

Residents should take weather alerts seriously, especially in the districts under the yellow warning.

What Does a Yellow Alert Mean?

A yellow weather alert generally indicates that people should remain aware and prepared for potentially disruptive weather conditions.

In the present Bihar forecast, the main threats are thunderstorms, lightning and strong winds rather than widespread extremely heavy rainfall. Winds of around 30–40 kmph are expected in the affected areas.

Therefore, residents should remain alert but should not assume that every location within an alerted district will necessarily experience the same intensity of rain or thunderstorm.

Weather conditions can vary significantly from one block or locality to another.

Monsoon Outlook Remains Important for Bihar

Bihar's weather during August is strongly influenced by monsoon systems and their movement across eastern India. Rainfall can fluctuate considerably over short periods, with some districts receiving showers while others remain comparatively dry.

The latest IMD outlook indicates that rainfall activity is expected to increase again across Bihar from August 14 onward.

For farmers, local administrations and residents, this makes continuous monitoring of district-level forecasts particularly important.

Bihar is likely to experience another round of unsettled weather on August 12, with thunderstorms, lightning, strong winds and light to moderate rainfall possible across several districts. Siwan, Saran, Gopalganj, Buxar and Bhojpur are among the areas mentioned in the current warning, along with districts in north-western and north-eastern Bihar.

There is currently no widespread heavy-rain alert for the state for the immediate 24-hour period. However, lightning remains a significant concern following several reported deaths during thunderstorms on August 11.

The IMD's broader forecast indicates that Bihar could see more widespread rainfall from August 14 to 17, including isolated heavy rainfall.

Residents should therefore remain cautious, particularly during thunderstorms. Farmers should avoid working in open fields during lightning activity, while commuters should be prepared for sudden showers, reduced visibility and strong winds.

The most important message for residents is to avoid unnecessary outdoor activity when thunderstorms develop and to move to a safe enclosed location as soon as lightning and thunder become active.
