Parliamentary Standing Committee to Visit Bihar from August 23–26, Review NH Development and Maintenance; Team to Travel Through Mithapur-Mahuli Elevated Corridor

Patna: The Parliamentary Standing Committee on Transport, Tourism and Culture will visit Bihar from August 23 to 26. During the visit, the committee will review the development, construction and maintenance of National Highways (NHs) in the state, along with the condition of major road projects and traffic arrangements.

The committee is chaired by JD(U) Rajya Sabha MP Sanjay Jha.

During its Bihar visit, the entire committee will travel through the newly constructed Mithapur-Mahuli Elevated Corridor for the first time. The project is considered important for improving connectivity and reducing traffic pressure in Patna.

The regional office of the National Highways Authority of India (NHAI) has written to the Bihar State Road Development Corporation (BSRDC), asking it to ensure the necessary arrangements ahead of the committee's visit.

Committee to Review Mithapur-Mahuli Elevated Corridor

A major part of the committee's itinerary will involve an assessment of the newly constructed Mithapur-Mahuli Elevated Corridor.

According to the route planned by the NHAI regional office, the committee will travel through the Mithapur Overbridge and then use the Mithapur-Mahuli Elevated Corridor.

The team will subsequently travel through the Mahuli ROB service road and reach NH-22, the Patna-Gaya road.

The construction of the Mithapur-Mahuli Elevated Corridor was completed recently. The committee's visit will provide an opportunity to assess the project's connectivity, traffic utility and condition after construction.

Visit to Gaya Also Planned

The Parliamentary Standing Committee is also scheduled to visit Gaya during its Bihar tour.

Gaya is an important religious, historical and tourism destination in Bihar. Better road connectivity between Patna and Gaya is important not only for local residents but also for tourists and economic activities.

The committee's route has been finalized by the NHAI regional office, with the team expected to travel along important road corridors connecting Patna and Gaya.

Encroachments to Be Removed From Patna-Gaya-Dobhi Four-Lane Road

The committee will also travel along the Patna-Gaya-Dobhi four-lane road.

In view of the visit, the concerned district administrations have been instructed to remove all types of encroachments from the route.

Authorities have also been directed to take necessary steps to maintain road conditions and improve traffic management.

Unauthorized structures, roadside stalls, illegal parking and other encroachments can affect traffic movement and road safety. Therefore, the administration has been asked to ensure that the route remains clear and properly managed during the committee's visit.

Discussion on Development and Maintenance of National Highways

During its Bihar visit, the committee will hold discussions on the development and maintenance of National Highways in the state.

A meeting with officials from the Ministry of Road Transport and Highways and the Bihar Road Construction Department has also been proposed.

The discussions are expected to cover the condition of existing National Highways, ongoing projects, maintenance requirements, traffic pressure and future road infrastructure needs.

Road maintenance will be an important issue because constructing a highway is only the first step. Regular repairs and maintenance are necessary to preserve road quality and ensure safe and smooth transportation.

Focus on Bihar's Expanding Road Network

Bihar has been witnessing continued development of roads and bridges in recent years. Several four-lane highways, elevated corridors, bridges and National Highway projects are being developed across the state.

The objective of these projects is to improve connectivity between major cities, reduce travel time, facilitate transportation of goods and support economic development.

The committee's visit will provide an opportunity to assess the progress and practical impact of these projects on the ground.

Better Roads Can Boost Tourism

Road connectivity is also particularly important for tourism in Bihar.

Places such as Gaya, Bodh Gaya, Rajgir, Nalanda and Patna attract visitors for religious, historical and cultural reasons. Improved road infrastructure can make travel to these destinations easier and more convenient.

Better connectivity can also benefit hotels, restaurants, local businesses, transport operators and other sectors connected with tourism.

Road Safety Also Requires Attention

Along with highway development, road safety remains an important issue.

High-speed roads require proper road signs, safe intersections, service roads, pedestrian facilities, traffic management systems and other safety measures.

During the inspection, the committee may also examine whether existing road infrastructure is adequately supporting safe traffic movement.

In urban areas, elevated corridors and four-lane roads can create different traffic-management challenges. Therefore, road construction needs to be accompanied by proper traffic planning.

Benefits for Local Residents

Well-planned development of National Highways and major road projects can directly benefit local residents.

Better roads can reduce travel time and improve access to employment, education, healthcare and commercial opportunities.

Improved connectivity between Patna and Gaya could make travel between the two cities more convenient. Similarly, projects such as the Mithapur-Mahuli Elevated Corridor could help improve traffic movement within Patna.

NHAI and BSRDC Preparing for the Visit

The NHAI regional office has already communicated with the Bihar State Road Development Corporation regarding preparations for the committee's visit.

The concerned authorities are expected to ensure that the roads included in the inspection route are properly maintained and that traffic arrangements remain smooth.

The administration has also been asked to remove encroachments and take other necessary measures to ensure that the committee can travel through the designated routes without disruption.

Importance of the Parliamentary Review

The visit is significant because a Parliamentary Standing Committee can examine infrastructure projects from a broader policy perspective.

Its observations can help identify issues related to construction quality, maintenance, connectivity, traffic management and future infrastructure requirements.

For Bihar, where road connectivity is closely linked with economic development and regional mobility, such a review can provide important inputs for future planning.

The Parliamentary Standing Committee on Transport, Tourism and Culture will remain in Bihar from August 23 to 26 to review the development and maintenance of National Highways and other major road projects.

Under the leadership of JD(U) Rajya Sabha MP Sanjay Jha, the committee will visit important road corridors and will travel through the newly constructed Mithapur-Mahuli Elevated Corridor for the first time as a complete team.

The committee will also travel along the Patna-Gaya-Dobhi four-lane road and visit Gaya. In preparation for the visit, district administrations have been instructed to remove encroachments and ensure better traffic management.

A meeting with officials from the Ministry of Road Transport and Highways and Bihar's Road Construction Department is also proposed to discuss the development and maintenance of National Highways.

The visit could provide an important assessment of Bihar's existing road infrastructure and help identify priorities for future highway development, maintenance, connectivity, tourism and road safety.
